Handkerchief Vase Problems Continued

Why is it that something I’ve done many times before all of a sudden doesn’t work. The last two vases I made were disasters. The first one I knew I over cooked because I missed when the kiln reached the process temperature.  This last one, I thought I watched closely and stopped in time. But apparently not. One of the corners folded over the edge of the stainless steel form. The only way to get out the form was to break the vase. Let’s hope the third time’s a charm…

Love your posts Margot. I’m still a bit of a beginner and find all your tips so useful. I will be trying the stacked glass next!

Margo – Thanks for leaving a comment. Knowing that people find it helpful helps me to keep on blogging about my glass adventure. Be sure to come back and let me know how the stacked glass project goes. Good luck!

    Hi Margot,

I’ve just started a kiln formed glass course – week 3 now -!
I hope to make a candle-holder then decorate it with
an animal print, like cheetah….Have you any ideas on
what paints may be good to use. We have enamel powders in
the studio we can mix with a medium to make paints or
apply dry – I’m just wondering if there are any others
you personally like. (I’ve heard about solvent based
ones like Vitrail, that don’t all need firing). I’m
especially looking for a good gold paint….sorry for
long email…you have beautiful work here!

    Thanks,

    Sarah

Sarah – Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I don’t have a lot of experience with paints. I have tried Glassline as well as some of the paint pens. The paint pens are good for lettering, but not for anything else. Glassline paints would work but I would think painting a cheetah pattern could be very time consuming. I don’t have any experience with enamels. Two thoughts: Is there a stencil that you could use a powdered frit with? Have you looked to see if there are any decals that cant be fired on? I have this place on my long list of things to check out someday: http://inplainsightart.com/files/decals-info.html Keep me posted would love to see what you end up doing!
